"Hammering a blade"
Here a carbon steel barstock blank is being hammered into a blade. Completed blades are strong and usable. All knives we make are fixed-blade, with a hidden tang. My personal knife has a desert ironwood handle, and a 4" drop-point blade. I have field dressed and skinned numerous deer and elk with the knife, and would recommend that length and shape for a good all-around hunting/camping knife.
The fingerguard and buttcap of each knife are brazed from nickel-silver rod. This creates a permanent and watertight bond between blade and guard. There are no openings into which water or other liquids can enter. All forged knives have our logo stamped into the hot blade.
A wide variety of handle materials are available. We make many knives with handles of dense hardwoods, or combinations of wood and other materials. Here to see a listing of some of the woods we have used in the past for handles: desert ironwood, bocote, rosewood, osage orange, ziricote, bubinga, monkeypod, tambuti, kira, macadamia, milo, kawi, mamane', red oak, black walnut, koa, myrtle, mango, yellow locust, honey locust, black locust, fishtail oak, sagebrush, russian olive, and catalpa. I cannot work with cocobolo or kingwood because of past allergic reactions to both.
Other handle materials include Fossilized "oosik" bones, caribou antler, deer antler, fossil whale rib, fossilized sea cow rib, elk antler, and black coral. If you have a particular handle material in mind, let's talk about it. I have chosen not to work with micarta, but do some work with laminates. I like to stick with "natural" handle materials.
Sometimes people send me an antler piece they have selected, usually one from an animal they have harvested. This makes the knife more "personal". On fillet knives, I recommend you stick with a "water resistant" dense hardwood.
Hunting knives and bowie knives are available in satin or mirror (extra charge of $40 for mirror) finish. You choose which you like the best. All other knives are available in satin finish only. You specify which blade shape and size you want when you place your order.
