Handmade Alaskan Ulu Knives

Ulu (pronounced oo' loo) means Women's Knife, and consists of a handle and semicircular blade. The knife was originally used mostly by the women. The Ulu is common to many people indigenous to the arctic, not just the Eskimo Tribes, and comes in many different sizes and shapes.

The first ulu blades were made from slate and bone. The handles, sometimes crafted to works of art, were made of bone, antler, wood, or ivory. Ulus are very versatile and the Indians used them for skinning, fleshing hides, cutting meat, filleting fish, eating, and sewing. The tribes still use them for the same purposes, and most of the ones we sell are used for kitchen tasks, such as cutting vegetables, herbs, or slicing pizza!

The handles and bases of the ulus we sell are made with moose or caribou antler as found in the wild. The blades are high carbon steel with a rockwell hardness of about RC47, which means they are hard enough to hold a decent edge. The blades are carbon, not stainless steel, so you must care for the knife to prevent corrosion. If the blade tarnishes lay the Ulu flat and wipe Scotch Brite across the blade to remove the tarnish. Do not put these ulus in any dishwasher, or allow them to stand in water.

Please remember, since these are made from real antler, each of the handles and bases is different. So, these photographs are a representation of the knives, and your handle will be from a different piece of antler. I do not personally make these knives, they are MADE IN ALASKA.

Shipping charges on any order is $10.00,  regardless of how big or small the order is!

Alaskan birch wood cutting board/bowl combination.

These are great to use with the ulu knives in the kitchen. The flat side can be used as a normal cutting board. The dished out side is made to use as a "cutting bowl". You just put whatever you wish to cut (nuts, berries, herbs, spices) into the bowled out area and rock the ulu back and forth in the bowl. The dished out area helps contain whatever you are cutting.
